A Person Cannot Claim that an Individual is Salafī Merely Due to the Fact that He Studied with a Salafī Scholar

Dr. Ahmad Ibn Umar Bāzmūl

Translated by Abu Suhayl Anwar Wright

The noble Shaykh, Dr. Ahmad Ibn Umar Bāzmūl said,

“Be careful, some people may use a proof for a person’s Salafiyyah that he is from the students of Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymīn (d.1421H) or the students of Shaykh Ibn Bāz (d.1420H) – may Allāh have mercy upon them. However, the Salafiyyūn do not count this to be a distinguishing sign; rather what is considered is only (their) manhaj, the way they interact and those who testify (to their Salafiyyah).

Because of this, the question may frequently come up, that a man comes to us claiming that he is from the students of Shaykh Muqbil (d.1421H) – may Allāh have mercy upon them – or from the students of Shaykh Rabīʿ(may Allāh preserve him) or the students of Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymīn (may Allāh have mercy upon him), is this sufficient?

The answer is that it is not sufficient until someone testifies (to his Salafiyyah), whereas it is possible, and this is something well known, that there could be from those who attend (those lessons of those Scholars) those who are upon an opposite methodology. Rather, some of them may be Takfīrī, even if he affiliates himself with (and says) that he studied with Shaykh Ibn al- Uthaymīn.

Because of this, one does not use as evidence by ones mere studying (with a Scholar) that the person is just like the Scholar (i.e. upon the same manhaj), is this clear? This is a benefit that you must be aware of.

Also because of this, when Alī al halabī comes to us and says, ‘I am from the students of al- Albānī(d.1420H),’ (may Allāh have mercy upon him); does this mean he is automatically from the people of Paradise or that he has reached the level of knowledge, which cannot be surpassed? No, this is not sufficient for you (O halabī)! Only until you walk and tread upon the manhaj of the Salaf; upon the Salafī methodology that Shaykh al Albānī treaded upon (may Allāh have mercy upon him). So if you oppose him then you are not from him, even if you strictly preserved attending his lessons from the very beginning up until he died, this will not benefit you!!

So the Scholars free themselves from those who are upon the opposition (to the Salafī manhaj), so therefore (the above) is not sufficient, pay attention to this.” End of Shaykh Ahmad’s words.1

1 This is an excerpt from the first cassette of Ahmad Ibn Umar Bāzmūl’s lessons on Manzūmah al-Qawāid al-Fiqhiyyah of Imām al-Sa’dī(d.1376H).

Shaykh Ahmad Ibn ‘Umar Baazmool answers the doubt used often by the opponents that one of their callers is a student of a well-known Salafee Scholar, in order to dupe the Salafee youth into letting down their guard and taking knowledge from this misguided caller – and thus he leads them to the Fire!
